One of the hardest tasks in photo editing is trying to change the color of something that is almost pitch black or bright white. Because black items absorb most light and white items reflect nearly all of it, simple tinting can sometimes look washed out. Here is how to handle them cleanly:
Recoloring White or Light Objects: White surfaces have plenty of brightness but very little color data. To turn a white shirt red, blue, or green, change the blend mode dropdown to Multiply. This forces your new color to sink into the fabric folds and natural shadows without turning the whole object into a flat gray sticker.
Recoloring Dark or Black Items: Deep black clothes or cars have deep shadows that hide texture. If you try to paint a light color over pure black using standard modes, it can look muddy. Instead, switch to Screen or Soft Light mode and slightly raise the color strength slider. This pulls out the wrinkles and stitches hidden in the dark areas and gives the new color realistic body.
Protecting Metal Parts and Reflections: If you are recoloring a leather jacket with metal zippers or sunglasses with chrome frames, you do not want the metal to turn green or purple.
